The California Brown Pelican nests on islands off the coasts of Southern California and Mexico. These bird populations declined in the 1960s from DDT and PCB toxins found in the food they eat. Brown Pelican populations have increased since the use of these toxins was banned. The Montrose Settlement Restoration Program is reducing other impacts to brown pelicans such as human disturbance.
