On December 8, 2000, the United States and the state of California reached a settlement with Aventis Cropscience USA, Inc., Stauffer Management Company, and Atkemix Thirty-Seven, Inc. Under terms of the consent decree, the responsible parties agreed to pay $9 million for natural resources restoration projects. The consent decree requires the trustee council to develop a restoration plan for the design, implementation, required permits (as necessary), monitoring, and oversight of specific restoration projects. The decree further provides that the trustee council will provide public notice, an opportunity for public input, and consideration of public comments.
