Overview: On October 28, 1996, the military reserve vessel SS
Cape Mohican spilled an estimated 96,000 gallons of intermediate fuel oil (IFO 180) into a dry dock structure. Approximately 40,000 gallons of fuel escaped into the San Francisco Bay at Pier 70. The spill occurred during routine maintenance when an opened valve discharged stored fuel while oil was being transferred from a stabilization tank. The oil affected many sensitive and highly valued natural resources such as national sanctuaries, historical parks and sites, beaches, and wetlands.
