Remedial/Injury Assessment
Case: Vieques/AFWTA, PR

Through its ongoing scientific support to the U.S. Navy and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, NOAA is helping protect and restore NOAA trust resources by assisting with the assessment of contamination, identification of risks to the environment, and the development of cost-effective strategies for assessment, cleanup, and restoration of the island’s natural resources.

Source: Past military training activities, munitions storage and detonation occurring on various areas of the island.

Release: Potential contaminants of concern include metals, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and explosive compounds.

Primary Injury: Environmental investigations are ongoing.
