Restoration Activities
Case: Tampa Bay Oil Spill, FL
The Trustees developed restoration plans to address both ecological injuries and
recreational losses that occurred. A Memorandum of
Agreement between the Trustees facilitated this process. The first of
these plans - the Final Restoration Plan and Environmental Assessment Plan:
Volume 1 (Ecological Injuries) was completed in 1997, and supplemented
in 2003, and guided the Trustees' choice of ecological restoration projects.
The second plan - the Final Restoration Plan and Environmental Assessment:
Volume 2 (Human Use & Recreational Injuries) - was completed in 2000
and identified the recreational restoration projects.
A broad suite of habitat and recreational restoration projects have been
implemented under these plans, using funds, property, and in-kind services
obtained in a natural resource damages settlement for the spill. These
restoration actions were selected and designed to improve the health of Tampa
Bay by enhancing habitat for beach, wetlands, sea turtles and birds as well as
to improve public access to and recreational opportunities associated with the
affected resources. Many of these restoration projects were undertaken in
partnership with local governments and non-governmental organizations.
The full suite of Restoration Projects undertaken includes the following types
of restoration actions:
