North Pass Oil Spill Restoration - Octave Pass Crevasse Creation Project
After a public review and comment period, the trustees selected the Octave Pass
crevasse creation project to address the injuries to marsh, as well as the
minimal injuries to birds, fish, and other water column organisms. This project
will create at least six and a half acres of functioning freshwater/brackish
marsh that provides services similar to those provided by the injured marsh. A
crevasse will be cut in the right descending bank along Octave Pass, in the
Delta National Wildlife Refuge, to promote infilling of shallow ponds with
sediment-laden Mississippi River water and eventually create sub-aerial land
(or deltaic splay) that becomes colonized by native marsh vegetation. The
process of accretion will continue as long as the crevasse is open. Over time,
the crevasse will begin to fill in, and the formed marsh will begin to subside.
Existing crevasses in similar sites have lasted approximately 20 years (to
date), and the created marsh is not anticipated to be fully lost for another 50
years or more.
