Primary Injury:

The Trustees, in cooperation with EMPCo and its representatives, conducted preassessment and assessment activities to determine the nature and extent of potential injuries to trust resources near Mendicant Island associated with the pipeline discharge. Analyses of shoreline habitat and field observations of habitat oiling and birds were used to assess the ecological impact from the oil discharge. The total area of marsh affected by the incident was 98 acres. Twenty birds in the vicinity of the discharge location also were observed oiled during the incident.
