Remedial/Injury Assessment
Case: Koppers, SC

Source: Beazer East, Inc., a successor in interest to the Koppers Company.

Release: PAHs (primarily in the form of creosote), heavy metals, dioxin, pentachlorphenols and other organic contaminants.

Primary Injury: The trustees have evaluated site-specific data and scientific literature to determine the nature and extent of contamination and associated adverse effects to natural resources in the adjacent marsh, tidal creeks and the Ashley River. The trustees have determined that potential injuries include:

  • Benthic/demersal resources – Sediment samples were collected from the site and analyzed for contaminant levels and associated toxicity to benthic resources. These samples indicated the levels of contamination in some areas were toxic to benthic (amphipods) and demersal (grass shrimp) resources.
  • Surface water resources – Based on levels of contamination detected in sediments and groundwater fish were also likely impacted.
