Remedial/Injury Assessment
Case: Cooper River, M/V Everreach, SC
Source: Container ship M/V EVERREACH
Release: Estimated at 12,500 gallons of #6 fuel oil.
Primary Injury:
The Trustees evaluated the potential for injuries to birds, aquatic fauna (e.g.,
fishery species such as finfish, blue crabs, shrimp and other invertebrates), a
variety of shoreline habitats, and for losses of four types of recreational
uses of area resources. The focus on these resources and services was based on
the data and other information collected as part of pre-assessment activities,
including input from local, state and federal government officials, the
Responsible Party, and other experts knowledgeable about the affected
environment.
As a result of this evaluation, the Trustees determined the spill caused
injuries to birds and shoreline habitats, and disrupted recreational
shrimpbaiting and shellfishing activities. These injuries and losses have been
quantified. That information provides the foundation for development of a
restoration plan appropriate to compensate for these losses.
