Restoration Activities
Case: Equinox, LA

After a public review and comment period, the Trustees selected the following ecological restoration project to address the injuries:

Re-establish 3.5 to 4 acres of intertidal marsh wetland within the interior southeastern wetlands of Barataria Bay. This wetland will be similar to those affected by the spill and will provide habitat for juvenile fish, shellfish, birds, and mammals; improve water quality by filtering sediments and other pollutants from the water column; and provide storm surge and flood protection.

Enhance/Nourish 8.4 acres of adjacent intertidal marsh via the application of thin-layer dredged sediment. Marshes adjacent to the primary restoration site are in a deteriorated state and are subjected to high subsidence rates and storm activity. Studies have shown that applying a thin-layer of dredged sediment to deteriorated marsh systems can improve vegetative vitality and longevity of the marsh.
