Restoration Activities
Case: Dixon Bay, LA

Project Description

A crevasse was constructed through the Mississippi River levee in the "Birdfoot" Delta to create 21 acres of emergent estuarine wetlands. This restoration effort will replace marsh that was injured by oiling, provide wildlife and estuarine nursery habitat, and promote storm and erosion protection.

Project Details

In February 1996, Chevron dredged a crevasse in a levee to create a freshwater diversion into the Delta National Wildlife Refuge, which is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). Dominant plant species are Scirpus spp. and Sagittaria spp., and monitoring is in progress. Freshwater diversion projects have become instrumental in countering the high rate of subsidence and land loss in the delta by providing sediments needed for land accretion and marsh creation.
