On March 24, 1989 the oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran around in
Prince William Sound Alaska, resulting in eleven million gallons of oil
spilled. The spill affected over 9,000 miles of shoreline, which had immense
impacts on natural resources, local industries and communities, subsistence
livelihoods, and tourism. The unique location and scale of this spill resulted
in one of the largest environmental disasters in U.S. history.
As a co-trustee for coastal resources, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA), through its Damage Assessment, Remediation and
Restoration Program, is ensuring that the public's natural resource interests
are fully restored and protected.
