Restoration Activities
Case: Rose Hill Landfill, RI

To compensate for injury to anadromous fish, the responsible parties agreed to fund a fish passage restoration project to be undertaken at the Main Street Dam and Palisades Facility located in Wakefield, Rhode Island. This project is expected to increase survival and populations of alewife and blueback herring in the Saugatucket River. It is anticipated that juvenile herring mortality at the Main Street Dam and Palisades Facility can be significantly reduced, perhaps increasing the size of the run to tens of thousands of fish.

In September 2002, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management reached agreement with the Towns of South Kingstown and Narragansett. The responsible parties have provided $117,000.00 to the Trustees for fish passageway improvements. The Trustees are currently preparing a Draft Restoration Plan and Environmental Assessment and will provide opportunity for public notice and comment.
