Restoration Activities
Case: Passaic River/Newark Bay, NJ

With the cooperation of all stakeholders, the trustees and their partners hope to dramatically improve the environment and the regional economy in the Lower Passaic River and Newark Bay Complex by:

  • Reducing contaminant levels in bottom sediments.
  • Removing fish consumption bans.
  • Improving water quality and riparian habitat.
  • Enhancing recreational activities.
Submit Restoration Project Proposals Online

The trustees are actively soliciting ideas for restoration projects from the public. If you have suggestions, please use the form below to tell us about habitats (e.g., wetlands, streams) or resources (e.g., species of fish, birds, or other wildlife) that could be restored or enhanced. We are interested in hearing about specific sites that you think require restoration or protection. Examples of restoration projects at sites across the country include

  • Improving surface water (through creation of stormwater retention basins)
  • Developing stream or river buffers
  • Acquiring land for habitat protection
  • Improving sediment quality and/or floodplain soils
  • Restoring/enhancing beds of submerged aquatic vegetation
  • Improving/restoring wetlands
  • Restoring/enhancing shoreline by removing levees, riprap, or bulkheads
  • Restoring/enhancing tributaries by removing barriers to fish migration
  • Improving adjacent uplands by acquiring/managing lands adjacent to waters or wetlands
  • Developing trails, boat launch sites, canoe portages, signage, etc
  • Developing/improving access points such as parking lots or launch sites for boats
  • Developing wildlife viewing areas, bathing beaches, and environmental education programs
