Restoration Activities
Case: Saint Lawrence River/Alcoa/GM, NY
The Trustees hope to dramatically improve the environment of the St. Lawrence
River watershed by --
-
Reducing contaminant levels
-
Removing fish consumption bans
-
Improving water quality
-
Improving riparian, river and wetland habitat
-
Improving fish, bird, mammal, amphibian, and reptile habitat
-
Enhancing recreational activities
-
Improving and enhancing cultural resources
The Trustees solicited restoration project ideas from the public that could
compensate for injuries to ecological resources, recreational fishing, and
cultural resources. The Trustees are preparing a Restoration Compensation and
Determination Plan (RCDP) that will document contaminants of concern, provide a
history of industrial operations and remedial actions at the three sites, and
describe the ecological, recreational fishing and cultural injuries and the
types of restoration projects that could compensate the public for those loses.
Restoration Projects
during 2006 included two projects sponsored by the St. Lawrence Trustee
Council, ALCOA, and General Motors. Both the Thompson Island Youth Camp and the
Akwesasne Freedom School provided youth with opportunities to learn about their
local environment and tribal culture.
