Remedial/Injury Assessment
Case: Kinder Morgan Sodium Hydroxide Spill, NJ

The area where the incident occurred is heavily industrialized as is much of the Arthur Kill. Shortly after the release occurred, the responsible party collected 20 surface water samples from the Arthur Kill. Surface water pH ranged from 6.0 to 7.0. Shoreline assessments were conducted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) from the spill site downstream to Raritan Bay. There were no observations or reports of any impacted wildlife or vegetation or any commercial or recreational navigational closures as a result of the spill. A municipal pier in Carteret was closed temporarily due to the release. NOAA used a computer model to estimate damages resulting from water column exposure.

A cooperative assessment between the responsible party, Greater New York Marine Transportation LLC, and the trustees was conducted to determine injury to natural resources and produce a plan for restoring injured resources.

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection served as the Lead Administrative Trustee with NOAA providing technical, legal, and administrative support.
