Remedial/Injury Assessment
Case: Irving Oil, Chelsea Creek, MA
The Trustees, in cooperation with the responsible parties and their
representatives, assessed the nature and extent of injury to the natural
resources associated with Chelsea Creek and Mill Creek resulting from the
spill. The Trustees determined that the relatively small amount and degree of
injury caused by the spill did not warrant a lengthy and costly damage
assessment process. Utilizing data from field observations performed shortly
after the spill , the Trustees determined that potential natural resource
injuries likely include:
-
Shoreline habitat. Approximately 2.5 miles of shoreline,
predominantly vegetated intertidal saltmarsh (Spartina alterniflora), was oiled
to varying degrees. Lesser portions of mud flat and riprap were also impacted
by the spill.
-
Benthic resources and their habitat. Benthic species in the
intertidal zone may have been impacted by the spill.
-
Surface water resources.
Aquatic resources including fish may have been impacted by the spill.
The Trustees and responsible parties agreed to make some conservative
assumptions regarding the natural resource injuries and focus on appropriate
restoration activities.
