Remedial/Injury Assessment
Case: Chevron Perth Amboy Facility, NJ
A cooperative assessment between the responsible party and the trustees was conducted to determine injury to natural resources and produce a plan for restoring injured resources. Shoreline assessments were conducted to document the degree and extent of oiling. A total of 4.2 acres of shoreline was oiled (1.9 acres in New Jersey and 2.3 acres in New York). Surface water sampling was conducted to measure total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
Surface sediment samples were collected and archived. Nineteen days of surveys
and searches were conducted, during which time forty to fifty oiled birds were
observed. Seventeen oiled birds were collected, of which thirteen were alive
and four dead. Twelve of the live birds were rehabilitated and released. One
dead juvenile female porpoise was found dead and covered in oil following the
spill, but necropsy results were inconclusive as to cause of death.
