Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, MI

Purpose: Restoration of natural resources along the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge.

Location: Grassy Island, lower Detroit River, Michigan (formerly a part of the Wyandotte National Wildlife Refuge).

Overview: NOAA has provided funds to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to assess potential contamination on Grassy Island and examine the feasibility of restoring habitat for resident and migratory birds, fish and wildlife. This effort is the first step in the restoration of natural ecological function to critical Michigan coastal wetland and adjacent shallow open water habitats significantly damaged by long-term human impacts.

An Interagency Agreement between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), and the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) was signed on August 10, 2001 to implement the project.
