Primary risk: The primary risk in the aquatic environment at the site is associated with the bioaccumulation of chromium, mercury, lead, cadmium, and arsenic from contaminated sediments and wetland soils.

NOAA’s Role in Cleanup Activities:

• NOAA conducted a baseline monitoring event in 1997, in a collaborative effort designed to transfer specific monitoring technology to Phelps Dodge.

• In 2003-2004 NOAA directed a bivalve bioaccumulation correlation study. This study confirmed that an alternate species could be substituted in the long-term biomonitoring program while retaining data comparability for long-term trend analyses.
